In this part, we will present a detailed explanation of why people with mental disorders often suffer from vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and the processes behind this (Zieli\u0144ska et al., 2023; Onaolapo &amp; Onaolapo, 2021; Rao et al., 2008).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"sensei-content-description has-ast-global-color-3-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:14px\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-9187f8ca alignfull uagb-is-root-container\"><div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-0c54da90 alignfull uagb-is-root-container\"><div class=\"uagb-container-inner-blocks-wrap\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-b6f0666b\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong>1. Disorders of nutrient absorption and metabolism&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nutrient absorption is the process by which the intestines take in vitamins, minerals, and other substances essential for the proper functioning of the body. Once absorbed, these nutrients are transported to various tissues, where they perform key roles\u2014such as supporting brain function, regulating metabolism, and contributing to neurotransmitter production. However, in individuals with mental disorders, this process can be impaired. Malabsorption may mean that a patient consumes an adequate amount of nutrients, but the body is unable to absorb them effectively. As a result, deficiencies may occur, which can exacerbate symptoms of mental illness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-88cef6ca\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Main causes of impaired absorption and metabolism of nutrients in psychiatric patients:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Changes in gut microbiome (dysbiosis);&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Intestinal inflammation \u2013 Inflammation of the intestines is an overactivation of the immune system, which damages the intestinal lining and impairs its absorption function<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Food intolerances and autoimmune diseases (e.g. coeliac disease);&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disorders in the transport of nutrients to the brain.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-f0ed868c\">\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2d73c53773f94e4314a72db2de56eda0 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#5a5e62;font-size:16px\"><strong>The most common absorption problems include:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-background is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px;border-radius:0px;background-color:#e1e1db;box-shadow:var(--wp--preset--shadow--natural)\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"background-color:#f7f7ed;flex-basis:50%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-container uagb-block-d5862db9\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A. Gluten intolerance and coeliac disease in patients with schizophrenia (Onaolapo &amp; Onaolapo 2021):&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Coeliac disease <\/strong>is an autoimmune condition in which the consumption of gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye and barley) triggers an immune response that damages the villi in the small intestine. These villi are responsible for nutrient absorption, so their damage leads to deficiencies in iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, B vitamins and vitamin D.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Gluten intolerance<\/strong> is a slightly milder condition in which gluten causes inflammatory reactions in the intestines but does not lead to permanent damage of the villi. However, chronic inflammation can still limit the absorption of key vitamins and minerals, increasing the risk of nutritional deficiencies.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Chronic inflammation<\/strong>, especially in the gut, can negatively affect the body\u2019s ability to absorb nutrients. Inflammation causes (Onaolapo &amp; Onaolapo 2021):&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increased intestinal permeability (so-called &#8220;leaky gut&#8221;), which means nutrients are not properly absorbed and harmful substances may pass into the bloodstream, triggering further inflammatory responses;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Impaired production of digestive enzymes, which hampers proper digestion and nutrient absorption.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<div\n\t\t\t\t\t\tclass=\"wp-block-uagb-image-gallery uagb-block-c925a959     \"\n\t\t\t\t\t\tstyle=\"\"\n\t\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"spectra-image-gallery spectra-image-gallery__layout--grid spectra-image-gallery__layout--grid-col-3 Gut microbiome disturbances (dysbiosis) <\/strong>in patients with depression and schizophrenia<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>The gut microbiome \u2013 the collection of bacteria residing in the gastrointestinal tract \u2013 plays a key role in mental health and nutrient metabolism. In patients with mental disorders, the following are often observed:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Reduced levels of beneficial bacteria: <\/strong>gut bacteria support the production of certain vitamins such as vitamin K, biotin, and folic acid (B9). Deficiencies in these nutrients can impair the metabolism of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, increasing the risk of depression and anxiety disorders\u200b.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Increased levels of pathogenic bacteria:<\/strong> some harmful bacteria can cause chronic inflammation, damage the intestinal lining, and weaken the body\u2019s ability to absorb nutrients, which can exacerbate symptoms of mental illness (Onaolapo &amp; Onaolapo 2021).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center has-background is-layout-constrained wp-block-column-is-layout-constrained\" Elevated homocysteine levels in patients with schizophrenia&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Homocysteine <\/strong>is an amino acid produced during protein metabolism. High levels of homocysteine are associated with an increased risk of heart disease and neurological disorders. Patients with depression and schizophrenia often exhibit elevated homocysteine levels, which suggests a deficiency in vitamins B6, B9, and B12 \u2013 all essential for neutralizing homocysteine. Excess homocysteine can damage blood vessels in the brain, increasing the risk of mood disorders, memory problems, and worsening of schizophrenia symptoms (Onaolapo &amp; Onaolapo 2021).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"
